What is a mantra?

Mantras are frequently used in Kundalini Yoga as objects of meditation. "Man" means "mind" and "tra" means to focus.

Mantras serve to bring the mind to peace, but also to transform negative thoughts, worries and fears. Sometimes mantras are used in a monotone, but often they are sung to different melodies. The music enhances the effect of the mantras.

The musicians

Satnam Kaur: vocals
Satya Singh: vocals, guitar, rabab, percussion, production

How to use a mantra

There are several possibilities how to use a mantra

1. Set yourself on a soft mat or carpet or sit on a chair with a straight back with your feet flat on the floor.
The hands are relaxed in your lap, women with the left hand on top of the right hand, men with the right hand on top of the left. The thumb tips are touching.
Close your eyes and sing with the mantra.
Time: 11-31 min.

2. Play the mantra softly or loud in the background as you are

  • relaxing,
  • working,
  • sleeping,
  • or even if you are not there.

It will elevate and cleanse the energy of the room, where it is played.

The project

Kundalini Yoga is very rich in spiritual music and great musicians. However on CD's mantras are often embellished with tempo changes, instrumental breaks or english or spanish parts.

This indeed makes the mantra more beautiful for listening. But it makes it difficult to use them for meditation at home or in yoga classes.

The Free Mantra Project was born to produce mantras that are beautiful, easy to sing and have a great meditative effect.

No cost

You are welcome to listen to and download the mantras, that are offered here. Additionally, in the light of Yogi Bhajan's saying "who comes with empty hands, will go with empty hands", we offer here the opportunity to empower the mantras that you use and love.

SodarshanChakraKriyaMetronome

Sit in easy pose. Inhale through your left nostril (close your left nostril with your index finger). Your concentration object is to think 16 times Wahe Guru. On every Wa (1) He (2) Guru (3) you pull and release the navel (48 times in total). Then you exhale through your right nostril (close your left nostril with your index finger).
Recommended duration: 11 min. (beginners) 31 min. (advanced)
The supportive music, which you can download here, uses just a metronome. So you do not need to count (which distracts your concentration) and you use your own inner voice, which is a deeper concentration object than listening to an outer voice singing it for you.
The metronome uses 2 sounds: loud and soft
loud loud loud loud / exhale
loud loud loud / inhale
loud soft soft / think Wa He Guru (16x) and pull the navel with it (16x3)

Works on: cleansing the chakras, will power, courage

Har Ji Har Har Har Har Har Ji

Har Ji Har Har Har Har Har Ji

The mantra "Har" stands for Shiva, the divine energy of letting go. "Ji" means beloved soul.

Five Ong

FIVE ONG Meditation

Ong is the primal sound, the creative sound of the universe.
